[diy inspiration] Flapper Style

Having been obsessed with The Great Gatsby since middle school (although, not so much when we were forced to read and analyze it to death in high school), I was elated when the movie version with Leonardo Dicaprio came out last year. I had always loved imagining the glamorous Daisy and Jordan lounging in a beautiful art deco mansion on the water and giggling about nothing-- Fitzgerald's descriptions of their outfits giving just enough details for the reader to imagine the rest for themselves.
In the more recent movie adaptation, costume designer, Catherine Martin, outdid herself with a beautiful and luxurious representation of the roaring twenties, inspiring "Gatsby Parties" all over the country. Since the flapper-style pieces worn back in the twenties in the middle of the industrial revolution, they were almost all handmade, and although intricate, could be easily DIY'ed today. Recently, I've been most inspired by the beautiful headpieces worn by the rebellious women who refused hats, opting instead for feathers, lace, and sparkle. With some sequins, feathers, beads, and a glue gun, you can easily recreate this look for your next speakeasy-style party!
