[what i wore] Stars and Spots

Thrifted Pacer star tee, Forever 21 leopard peplum skirt, black flower headband, and quilted purse, Lui Chiny Solestruck wedges, Rhinestone cuff from Styles, and random heart sunnies from eBay
I picked up this star print t-shirt on my last thrifting excursion, since I have a weird obsession with printed t-shirts. This particular tee had shoulder pads in it, but I was surprised to find they were velcro-ed in! I pulled them out for this look, but saved them in case I want to wear them in the future.

[what i wore] meow

I've always been a staunch supporter of Blair Waldorf's divine proclamation that "LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!", but as the legging trend is not only not going away, but also super comfortable and practical, I've been on the hunt for shirts that are long enough to cover my behind, without looking too much like a dress. I found this hi-lo cat shirt on plndr a couple of weeks ago and finally wore it out to lunch with some girlfriends. Between the stretchy leggings and oversized nightgown-like top, my Souplantation food baby stayed out of sight.

[DIY] Studded Shirt

I love studs. For real. I want studs on everything. This DIY is super easy and super inexpensive. Find a shirt with something interesting on it, whether its pleats, cutouts, or beading (I got this little eighties number at Salvation Army for less than $3), and line the edge of that area with studs. Put them close together, far apart, in a pattern, whatever. Stud that thang! I was able to add a little bit of modern edge to this vintage shirt and make it less of a "basic" and more of a statement piece.

Life in Color: Rebirth

When this year's Life in Color (formally, Dayglow) party sold out, I knew it was going to be a good time. I hadn't attended this party since 2010, when it cost like, seven bucks at the door and was held at the very tiny intimate World Beat Center in Balboa Park. Now it's under brand new management and selling out huge venues like the San Diego Sports Arena (Valley View Casino Center? eh?) with huge artists like Swanky Tunes and LA Riots, and bringing back hometown hero DJ Ideal, who played at that very first San Diego Dayglow party back in the day.
If you have never heard of this epic paint party, it's basically an electronic dance music concert, with a twist. Everyone wears white, and at the end of the midnight countdown-- the paint comes out. Event staff pumps paint into the crowd from the stage using huge hoses, while others run through the crowd with paint-filled water guns. Party-goers can buy paint inside the venue to spray on each other as well.

We managed our way up to the front for the LA Riots and Swanky Tunes sets!
My eyes were burning from paint, which I constantly slipped in and fell like, four times, and I'm covered in bruises, but for good times with friends, incredible music, and a pretty sweet, albeit unintentionally tie-dyed shirt, it was definitely worth it.

[what i wore] neon tropicana

Here in San Diego, the weather has been vacillating between warm and cool, sunny and cloudy, windy and calm-- sometimes all in one day. Regardless of the actual weather, it's obvious that I've been craving summer, because I've been buying up everything with flamingo, pineapple, and palm prints to give me a jump start on that vacation feeling. Today it was warm enough for me to throw on a couple of my new pieces to go run errands.

[DIY] Embellished Shoulders

So we've all been wearing this embellished shoulder trend for a couple years now-- I'm super late to the DIY train on this one, but I needed to do something with the conservative sweaters that've been rotting in my closet since my trip to Iran. Shoulder bling is one of the easiest DIY's in history-- you basically just add stuff to the shoulders of a shirt. Here's how I made my own version without sewing or glue.
You will need:
Shirt (long or 3/4 sleeves work best)
Felt or sturdy fabric
Chain
Studs
Safety Pins
Scrap Paper
Scissors

First, use your scrap paper to sketch out the shape you want to use to put on your shoulders. I used a sort of rounded off rectangle. Cut two of these out of your felt.
Cut twelve pieces of chain in varying lengths, but all longer than your shoulder pad oval thingy you just cut out. Split your chain into two groups of six and thread them onto a safety pin. Pin these safety pins to the top centers of your shoulder pads. Then, at even intervals, anchor your chains down to the felt with more safety pins.
Add studs in between your safety pin anchors, using a butter knife to push the prongs down very flat in the back of your fabric. Fill the rest of the space on your fabric with safety pins. You could create a pattern, but I used different sized pins facing in all directions and overlapping.
To attach your shoulder pads, lay them over the shoulders of your shirt so that the chains dangle down the sleeves, making sure they are both even with each other. Use more safety pins to attach them to your shirt. I would suggest taking the shoulder pads off the shirt when you launder it, and reattaching them again later.

Did you try this project? I would love to see it! Leave me a comment or send me a picture on Facebook!
